internal factors in education
Becker's
theory is...
ideal pupil
where
teachers used to classify/label pupils
and students
based on
their own view of their
ideal pupil
/student
he did his research by
interviewing 60 high-school teachers
in Chicago and found that
they would often share their views on their 'ideal pupil
' - highly motivated, intelligent and well behaved
pupils that were
closest to these idealistic views
were predominantly from
middle class
backgrounds
those who were
furthest away
from this
idealistic view
were kids from
working class
backgrounds
Becker's research highlighted how
teachers are more likely to label middle class children
as more able,
good students
in comparison to working class students
Teachers are more likely to
label working class children as deviant
Rosenthal and Jacobson's
theory is...
self-full filling prophecy
- a
prediction that comes true
simply by virtue of it having been made
interactionists emphasize the importance of a socially constructed identity - i.e.
our self concepts is shaped around other people's perceptions and labels.
if someone label's you as thick
, the more people call you thick the
more you believe it
interactionists argue that
labeling can affect student's achievement
by creating a self-fulfilling prophecy
step 1
: teacher labels pupil
step 2
: the teacher treats pupil accordingly
step 3
: the pupil internalises the teachers expectations
interactionism
based on every day interactions
