Why?
Reduces conflicts, arguing, and fighting
Helps students make and keep friends
Interpersonal skills are an important part of students’ development
When?
During break times and when the students are not actively engaged in scheduled class time
During clubs and at the end of the day during reflection time
After students may have a disagreement
How?
Have students model and role play relationship skills
Take students aside to discuss and have them reflect on how their behaviors affect others, what behaviors would make others want to be friends with them, etc
Teach lessons on relationships, friendships, getting along with others, tolerance, etc. To teach I would use the resource: Kid’s Health: Friendship that PBIS World provided
Use the Daily Positive Behavior Tracking Form for at least 6 weeks
Why?
Gives students a common “language”
Helps students make friends
Increases self confidence, self concept, and self esteem
When?
When the student seems out of place, ostracized, or isolated
When the student is rude, short, pushy, etc
How?
Use the lesson plans from Making and Keeping Friends
Do a social skills lesson about being respectful with the entire class
Tier 2
Mentoring
Why?
Helps student to feel like someone “has their back”
Provides a student with a personal connection and buy-in
When?
when a student is having significant issues getting along with others
When students exhibit very little motivation and effort or just do not seem to care about work and/or behavior
How?
Be a mentor to my student and demonstrate to your that I am consistent, dependable, and trustworthy
Try to do something fun or engaging with the student, like shooting a basketball, playing cards, or talking about a common topic of interest
Rewards System
Why?
Helps reinforce positive behaviors and expectations
Produces immediate and quick results
When?
When students have difficulty getting along with others or interact inappropriately with others
How?
Give the student the Forced Choice Survey to determine what type of reward they prefer and will be most likely to work toward

Tier 3
No Passing Time
Why?
Prevents behavior issues from occurring in the halls and other unsupervised or unstructured settings
Prevents conflicts, fights, etc
Easy to implement
When?
When a student is having issues with other students and getting into conflicts during passing
When a student is instigating conflicts in the halls during passing
How?
The student may be accompanied by an adult, like a parapro, if needed
The student will have 5 minutes to go to their locker, get their things, use the restroom, and go to their next class
Parents involvement is a key as well
