Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS)
Disruptive Student ("Chatty Cathy" and BFF) Talking openly and loudly, laughing, whispering and disrupting students
Tier 2
Continue eye contact to remind students to focus on correction behavior
Data Tracking: Weekly Scatter Plot and Self Monitoring Assignment Sheet
Self Monitoring to promote self awareness and reflection. Have students use a chart or checklist to keep track of behaviors
If chattering stops, praise students using positive language to acknowledge correction of disruptive behavior
If chattering continues, move to Tier 3
Continue to use positive reinforcement and acknowledge progress and positive behavior
Tier 3
Move to a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) to provide an individualized plan to address the behavior problem, inviting additional support from counselors and/or support staff

Tier 1
Use eye contact to alert students
Verbally ask students to stop
Use break in lecture to talk to students in hallway
Separate chatty students
Talk to students to ascertain root of behavior (emotional, social?)

Tier 1
Avoid power struggles, use positive language and attentive listening
Assign reflection sheets as homework to gain additional information and encourage students to reflect on the impact of this behavior on classmates
Talk to students in hallway to ascertain root of the bullying and gain context
If bullying stops, praise students using positive language to acknowledge correction of disruptive behavior
If bullying continues, move to Tier 2
Speak with school counselor for guidance in dealing with bullying and to alert to a potential larger problem

Tier 2
Counselor Referral - Stage 1: Invite the counselor to speak to the class/grade about cliques, bullying and intimidation to encourage a dialogue about the damaging effect of this behavior. Stage 2: individual students meet privately with counselor

Continue dialogue using attentive listening and positive reinforcement, acknowledging effort and progress in correcting behavior
