Developed for use in describing the human body
Terms that describe relation of extremities to the body
Distal
Away from the point
Proximal
Close to the point
Body planes
Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various levels to separate the body
3 mains types
Midsagittal
Divides body in the middle left and right
Medial
Body parts close to the midline
Lateral
body parts away from the midline
Frontal
Divides body into front and back
Ventral/Anterior
Body parts in the front
Dorsal/Posterior
Body parts in the back
Transverse
Horizontal plane that divides the body in two halves top and bottom
Cranial
body parts in the head region
caudal
body parts near the sacral region
Superior
body part above another
Inferior
body part below another

Two main types

The cavities in the front of the body
