In my class I recently implemented a stoplight intervention it was designed for one student, but has enabled all students to be aware of energy levels. Red means stop, this is where we never want to be, for example, screaming, pushing, fighting, etc. Yellow is for outside, students can run, jump, talk loudly, etc. Green is for inside, students can sit nicely, work together, use inside voices etc. Students are now aware of their energy levels and know ways to calm themselves down as well as help and keep their peers on task. When a student is on red or yellow we do a few breathing exercises together, then I ask them to go to the calm down corner where they can read a story, draw a picture, or do a fine motor activity (includes calm movements) until they have calmed down.
