It has been argued that colonialism as a broader social determinant of health must be considered in analyzing health outcomes of Indigenous people in Canada (Czyzewski, 2011).
-
Examples of disparities that have been linked to colonialism are increased rates in AIDS, diabetes and suicide among Indigenous populations compared to non-Indigenous. (Czyzewski, 2011).
Socio-Economic Factors
-
-
The low socio-economic status of Indigenous people results in situations like: poverty, malnutrition, overcrowding and poor hygiene (Gracey, 2009).
An increase of unemployment which leads to an increase in poverty (Reading, 2013).
-
Mental Health Issues
-
-
A strong link has been identified between depression and suicidal thoughts and people whose family members were enrolled in residential schools.
-
In most aspects of health, Indigenous individuals in Canada experience a disproportionate significance of ill-health compared to non-Indigenous people (Boksa et al., 2015).
