Kettle Design
Features
These are features which are commonly found on most high end kettles and should be required for OCRSmallAppliances's premium kettle. Without these these the new kettle would not be able to compete with competitor's appliances
Water Level Indicator - This allows the user to see how much water is in the kettle to ensure that the correct amount is boiled.
This feature adds to the convenience of the device by taking the guesswork out of how much water will be boiled
Power Indicator Light - Allows the user to see when the kettle is switched on which makes the device more convenient to use
Cordless Connection - The use of a separate base and kettle design allows the base to remained plugged in and the kettle to be easily separated with gold pins and rings than can conduct electricity without the use of wires.
Spring Loaded Lid - This feature allows for easily opening the the lid of the kettle with a single button which makes it more convenient to use as it requires little force
Ergonomic Handle - The handle needs to conform the size and shape of most hands. Without this the handle would be uncomfortable to use making hot drinks. The handle also needs to be insulated against heat to ensure that the user does not get burnt by the transfer of heat.
Design
The design of a high end product is important. This is because it is one of the features that consumers of the high end will be focused on and most kettles already have key features
Unique Style - A premium kettle needs a unique design that stands out compared to the competition. This could be inspired by previous classic designs or something new and revolutionary
Long Life Time - A premium kettle needs to be built of active components that have a long life span. This ensures that the kettle will continue working and the manufacturer will not have to do warranty replacements which costs a large sum on money
Ergonomic Fit - The design of the kettle needs to have a comfortable handle which will make the kettle nicer to use as it will not cause pain to the hand of the user. This will ensure that uses will continue to use the product and not return it
Handle - The handle needs to be a shape which fits well with the human body and offers comfort as well as a good grip on the large weight of a kettle full of water. It should also be insulated from the body of the kettle so it does not get uncomfortably hot, because of this a polymer would be a suitable because of it's ability to act as an electrical inuslator
Power Button - This needs to be in a convenient location that is easily to find. Making it large will also be more convenient as it be easier to hit. An integrated power indicator will highlight to the user when the kettle has been activated to improve usability
Sale & Consumer
A high end product such as this needs to be sold in the correct place to ensure large sale volumes and high profit margins
The most likely consumer for a product like this is someone who is established in life so over around 25. These people will have a larger amount of disposable income to spend on more luxury products
A high end product such as this needs to be old in high end department shops such as John Lewis and Debenhams as they cater to the high end market such that this kettle is aimed at. If this product was sold in low end shops sales figures would be low because those costumes would not be able to afford such an expensive prodcut
Power & Features
The power and features are a very important part of the kettle as they are the core components which affect the usability of the kettle with poor a poor power rating the kettle will take a large amount of time to boil which is inconvenient for the user.
3000W is a common power rating for kettles sold in the UK. This is because any lower than this would be above the 13 Amp fuse rating in the UK and would be dangerous to operate
The heating element inside the kettle should be consoled to ensure tha tthe user does not reach down and touch the boiling hot kettle as this would give them a nasty bun which would not be a pleasant for the user
The transfer of power between the kettle and the base needs to be concealed and insulated to ensure that the electricity does not pass into the user.
