Chapter 7.2- body planes and terms
Directional terms are used for describing the human body
It describes the relation of 1 body part to another while in anatomic position
Anatomic position is when the person is faced forward, standing erect, arms at sides with palms facing forward
Body Planes
Imaginary lines drawn through the body at different levels to separate the body into sections
Directional terms are created by body planes
3 main planes: Transverse, Midsagittal, Frontal
Transverse plane
Horizontal plane that divides body into top and bottom half
Inferior
body parts below other body parts
Superior
body parts above other body parts
EX: the knee is superior to the ankle, but inferior to the hip
Cranial
body parts located by the head
Cuadal
body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column
Midsagittal/Median plane
Divides the body into left and right sides
Medial
Body parts close to the midline
Lateral
body parts away from the midline
Frontal/Coronal plane
Divides the body into the front section and a back section
Ventral/Posterior
body parts on the front
Dorsal/Posterior
body parts on the back
Proximal
body parts close to the point of reference
Distal
body parts distant from the point of relation
Ex: the wrist is distal, and the elbow is proximal to the shoulder
Body Cavities
Dorsal Cavity
along the cavity located on the back of the body
Cranial
contains the brain
Spinal
contains spinal cord
Ventral Cavity
separates the diaphragm
Thoracic
in the chest
contains: esophagus, trachea, bronchi, lung, heart
Abdominal/Pelvic
Upper
stomach, small intestines, large, appendix, liver, spleen
Lower
urinary bladder, reproductive, last part of intestines
Divided into quadrants
RUQ
RLQ
LUQ
LLQ
Divided into regions
Umbilical
Hypogastric/ Pelvic
Epigastric
Hypochondriac
lumbar
Iliac/ Inguinal
Small Cavities
Orbital
contains eyes
Nasal
contains nose structures
Buccal
contains mouth that has tongue and teeth
