Characters in the book have to much selfishness which worsens themselfs and others.
Abigail
Abigail was to selfish to admit that she had made a mistake, and instead she blamed others for her mistake.
Got 19 people killed for being falsely accused as witches by Abigail.
Put herself in a position where she had to keep lieing to survive.
In the court house when Mary Warren and Danforth started to try and convict her of makeing the doll herself, she started to act as if there was a yellow bird and that Mary Warren was attacking her. This is because she was to selfish to confess that she was the one who made the doll.
Made Mary Warren look like a fool and got accused of witchcraft.
When talk of rebelling against the court and Abigail started, Abigail realised that her reputation could be ruined. She had to much pride to allow that to happen. Instead of accepting fait she stole all of Parrisses money and ran away.
Since Abigail took Parrisses money she left him broke.
Abigail had nothing left to live for. No one she knew, no job, and no purpose.
Proctor
When Proctor was ask to write and sign a confession he did but wouldn't give it back and instead ripped it to pieces. This is because Danforth was going to put it on the church for all to see. He was to selfish to do so, even to save his own life.
He got hangged and died.
Left behind his wife and child to have no father or husband.
Untill the end of the book where he didn't care about anything but getting his wife free from prison and Abigail locked up, he wouldn't confess to anyone, not even Abigail, that he had committed Adultry. He was to selfish to let people know that he had done such a crime.
This beat him down so much inside that he could never look at himself as good again.
Because of him saying he didn't ever love Abigail and denying they ever touched her, she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft having her locked up.
Danforth
Danforth was to selfish to postpone all the hanggingsfrom the following morning to a later date because it could show weakness of the court. He had also hangged so many people already.
Made more innocent people get hung for no reason.
Forced Proctor to get hangged even though it would ruin the town because he was such a noble name.
Danforth had to much selfishness when Proctor claimed that he had committed adultry with Abigail to take his word for it because he didn't want to be exposed for being wrong all along. He instead calls in proctors wife to prove what Proctor has said is correct. She was obviously lieing and Danforth could tell but was to selfish to call her out on it in order to protect his pride.
Sent Proctor off to jail and to later be hangged.
Gave Abigail more chance to falsely accuse people of witchcraft.
Elizabeth
When Proctor called for Elizabeth to secure and provide full evidence that he committed adultry with Abigail, she had to much selfishness lieing and saying he didn't to keep the Proctor name clean.
Got Proctor jailed.
Showed to all of the people that she had lied and did lie unlike Proctor said.
At the end of the book Elizabeth was to yo selfish to forgive Proctor for what he had done and wouldn't try to convince Proctor to sing the confession when begged by Hale.
Made Hale very sad, and lost the town a very respectful man.
Proctor got killed by being hanged.
