The Dutch chose to rule their colony by indirect rule, they used Javanese nobles to be the messengers and the peasants never saw the people they gave the crops.
Due to terrible management and influence from other countries, the Netherlands flipped to direct control. They bought up land and turned them into plantations.
The Dutch didn't originally plan on colonizing Indonesia; instead, they wanted to trade without the threat of other countries taking away their profits.
