Illusions are better than reality- that's the sad truth. Life sucks, essentially
this fact is non-discriminatory- it applies to everyone, no matter their life situation (the theme is supposed to be universal and this means that it is)
rich people- such as Og.. surprising why someone who has good things in life would still choose the OASIS over reality- that shows how Cline really thinks that reality sucks, bc even someone who has everything they need doesn't like it. He says he's lonely and he has experienced great loss in his life (Kira), so could this be Cline's way of showing that no matter what someone has in life, reality is always painful? This means that the theme applies Universally
the end where james halliday tells Wade not to get caught up in the illusion and waste his life in the OASIS because that would be a mistake and reality's better. Another example of a rich person (he is likely one of the richest in the world) who is not satisfied with reality.
(intro) obviously the 'average' people in this time need an escape, so that's why they use the OASIS. But, even the rich use it.
Aech has to change her avatar (nearly everything is different) to be the "ideal human" from who she really is..
she's a black woman but her mother said that white men have the best chances in the world or something(find that quote near the end) so that's what she made her avatar in order to make her illusion better than her reality
in this case, she can do so much more in the OASIS than she could in real life- IRL she lives in an RV but in the OASIS she is fairly well off and respected.
this is a possibility for anyone in the oasis so who knows how many people have done it. Anyone could be in search of a better life and can easily create an illusion of a different person than they are.

the final battle- this shows that people can even get bored and dissatisfied with an alternate reality. So many people were willing to give their virtual lives up just to experience something interesting.. why would they willingly give their lives so easily if they were enjoying their alternate reality?
at the very end of the essay: the book does not end on an entirely pessimistic note, however, because (Wade says he never wants to go back in the OASIS and he's starting a real-life relationship with Art3mis)
the oasis is so realistic of an illusion and people get lost in it because of this and because they can be/do anything they want to, unlike on Earth. there are lots of quotes about how realistic it is (find these)...
Wade and Art3mis and really every other gunter become so obsessed with the OASIS and finding the egg that their realities fall away from them- they are totally immersed in it and nothing else really matters to them. they become obsessed with things that aren't real because it is more interesting and they like it more than their reality.

wade also becomes obsessed with Art3mis and his two obsessions clash, meaning he's more interested in two huge things than his own life
money, legal contracts, huge clans of people, even whole companies (IOI) are based around this surreal game.
