Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
Elements, Compounds and Mixtures
Elements
In an element all the atoms are the same
Compound
Compounds contain two or more different elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion
Can be seperated using a chemical reactions
Usually have different properties from its reactants
Mixtures
Different elements or compounds that are not chemically combined
To separate a mixture you must us a physical separation technique
Molecules
Has any element chemically combined
Interpreting a chemical formula
The small number after the symbol is the amount of atoms present in that element
Compounds have fixed proportion of atoms so changing the amount of atoms changes the compound
Physical separation techniques
Are used to separate mixtures
Filtration
Used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
To do this a filter paper and funnel must be used
