John King got the report about the store surveillance, and instead of reporting out what was found, he reported that the suspect was caught. This is based on his personal comments about not wanting to "inflame racial sensitivities."
Other networks saw what CNN reported and decided to break the news without confirming the story. This is based on the the Boston Globe and Fox News citing CNN as their source.
In order to prevent panic or racial insensitivity the wrong story was reported that led to confusion among the news outlets and even law enforcement. This is based on the response by the FBI who were still searching for the suspect.
