Halima.Abdi-Endocrine System
Pituitary gland
Anterior pituitary
Secretes hormones, Stimulates growth of all cells & growth of epiphyseal plates
Gonadotropins - Stimulates testes/ovaries to produce hormone
Follicle stimulating hormone-ovaries and testes
Luteinizing hormone-ovaries and testes
Prolactin - Stimulates synthesis of milk - breast tissue
Adrenocorticotropic hormone- Stimulates hormone release from cortex of adrenal gland
Thyroid Stimulating hormone - Stimulates growth of all cells + growth of epiphyseal plates
Posterior pituitary
Stores hormones
Parathyroid gland
pituitary hormone, increases blood calcium levels when it falls too low
Pineal gland
Produces and regulates hormones such as melatonin
Adrenal gland
Adrenal medulla
Secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine
Adrenal Cortex-produces corticosteroids
Zona Fasciculata
Secretes glucocorticoids- helps keep blood glucose levels normal
Zona Reticularis
Secretes glucocorticoids & androgen- androgen becomes testosterone + estergen
Zona Glomerulosa
Secretes mineralocorticoids- make kidneys reabsorb water & sodium
Thyroid gland
Thyroid hormone-Increases rate of metabolism, conversion of nutrients to energy
Calcitonin- Decreases activity of osteoblasts, only active in children
Pancreas
Has both endocrine & exocrine functions, alpha cells secrete glucagon. Beta cells secrete insulin
Reproductive gland
Ovaries
Secretes estrogen and progesterone
Testes
Secretes testerone
Thymus gland
Secretes thymic hormones, causes T lymphocytes to become immunocompetent
Hypothalamus
secretes hormone that stimulates that release of hormone from anterior pituitary or inhibits hormone secretion
