Week 1 (5 functions of media in a democratic society (1) information…
Week 1
-
mediatization (process)
-
2) media more independent; higher journalistic professionalism; political system has upper hand; media does not media messages unconditionally anymore
3) actors begin to adapt to the media bc of independence, media has upper hand + external to the political system; politicians further increase skills to adapt media logic (content, grammar, rhythm of media)
4) politics now adopts media logic (not adapt); governing processes now considers media logic and news worthiness; media is no longer external; politicians who need to answer to people are most affected
social media (great potential, but...)
-
selective exposure, filter bubbles--> still one public sphere or more bc different ones are created depending on interests ?
-
-
political communication
the interaction between politics, media and the public
-
evolves with larger societal trends (individualization, depillarization, the crisis of parties, increased voter volatility, commercialization)
-
burglar alarm standard
-
media selects what is important and uses sensationalism so people can really see it (public not interested in the boring bits of political news)
criticism: media really has a lot of power; burglar alarm that keeps on ringing (even when there is nothing--> overexaggeration-- check on marianas quizlets)
-
-
-
-
role of journalists: disseminator of information, interpreter (explaining), adversarial (vs politicians and business), populist mobilizer (mobilizing people)
full news standard is not realistic, but its a good starting point bc the public should get to know what they need to know (functions of media-- information transferal)
journalists want to stick to full news standard, and think they do, but reality= burglar alarm
