Tier 2 Intervention
Check In Check Out (CICO) Improves student accountability . Increases structure. When student has filed to respond to other interventions from Tier 1. So far this student has not needed further intervention. But if she continues to not complete homework, if other interventions fail, I could apply this strategy.
What is it? The program consists of students daily checking in with an adult at the start of school to retrieve a goal sheet and encouragement, teachers provide feedback on the sheet throughout the day, students check out at the end of the day with an adult, and the student takes the sheet home to be signed, returning it the following morning at check in.

Check In Check Out would work well with 2nd graders because they have a handout for visual reference and accountability. It also connects the teacher and the parent with comments and a signature. This helps increase the parent-teacher collaboration to help the student stay on target.
Tier 1 Interventions
Organize materials daily Other students have just one file/folder they take home with their homework assignment paper and the homework handout. This student has a folder with 8 different compartments. At first it seemed excessive for such an unorganized student, but I spent about 10-15 minutes one day labeling each section with the student based on the contents she had inside and what she wanted to keep/recycle. After labeling each section and inserting the matching handouts, I asked her to show me the file daily.

Show teacher file daily Since then we have checked it about 3 times in 2 weeks. So I should probably check with her. She had about 4-5 homework assignments that were incomplete. She might have completed just one of the extra past homework but several were still incomplete. She said that she goes to hagwon (Korean group tutoring classes they attend after school for...more school) and has to do that homework so she doesn't have time to make up the past homework for school.
These Tier 1 Interventions from PBISworld website are what I have already done with the 2nd grade student is easy to do in the classroom. It's simple, yet profound. As an assistant teacher I was able to have the time and energy to work one-on-one with the student. They were late for a special class, but it was necessary for the future success of the student. The other teacher was notified and approved of the situation. The student could experience the organization with me as well as give me input as to what she wanted to label the files. She even remembered the week after to remind me to check her file.

N is a 2nd grade female student who likes to share her thoughts and stories about why she is doing what she is doing at school and at home. She is very attentive during instruction and gets along with others during collaboration and group work. But she also is very disorganized. When looking inside her desk, there are loose papers from weeks before. She wanted to throw them all away but was guided to look at them first so see if they are still some that she should keep as current ongoing work. She also says that she sometimes cannot find materials needed for class even though they were assigned a specific folder. For her homework file, she has a multi-tab folder instead of one simple homework folder. None of the sections are used with the same type of papers. She has old papers for writing down past homework assignments that are not fully complete. She also has many empty homework handouts that were not completed nor turned in.
