Grade 2 Classroom Behavior Issue 1 - Aggressiveness/Bullying - The student I will discuss was involved in aggressive behavior and bullying towards other students. I have discussed the issue of him being violent towards the students and discovered that the father would occasionly hit him as punishment (still quite normal in China!). After discussion with the father we have helped him move away from this sort of punishment and to be more positive. I will look at this issue using the PBIS system as if I hadn't been dealing with it so far.
Tier 1 Strategies -
- Use the Stop Walk Talk strategy - Teach this strategy class wide to minimize issues that arise.
- Take away unstructured/free time - Show the student that their are negative outcomes when they behave in an aggressive or bullying manner.
1 . Talk to parent/note home - Getting some background information on the situation will be very useful in moving forward with the issue.
Data Monitoring System - Student observation, note taking, comparing student complaints before/after.
Tier 2 Strategies
2 Mentoring - Working with another teacher outside the classroom to build positive relationships and give an outlet.
- Counselor Referral - Student may need more specialized/professional help to uncover/deal with their issue.
- IBP - Individual behaviour plans have worked effectively for students in similar situation before.
Data Monitoring System - As for Tier 1 + Daily IBP Feedback, Method Feedback, Counselor Feedback.
Tier 3 Strategies
- Alternatives to Suspension - School exclusion is a drastic action which should be only taken as a last, last resort and isn't even an option in this school - Look at options in school if student is too dangerous to have with other students.
-
Grade 2 Classroom Behaviour Issue 2 - Lack of Responsibility - The student I will discuss here originally showed very little responsibility for his own work, he doesn't do classwork. Again, I have been working with this student and he has improved massively but for the purposes of this assignment I will be using the PBIS system as if I hadn't been working with this student.
Tier 2 Strategies
- Peer Mentoring - Have a partner assigned to help them if they are facing difficulties. Make clear to both students that mentee will be helping not doing.
- Self Monitoring - Give students opportunities to track and self correct own behaviors.
- IBP - Individual Behaviour Plan - Keep student accountable to themselves and to the teacher.
Data Monitoring System - As in Tier 1 + IBP Daily form, mentee feedback, self monitoring data.
Tier 3 Strategies
- Check In Check Out (CICO) - This system keeps students accountable, engaged and excited. Is intensive for both student and teacher. Could even be applied as a Tier 2 intervention.
Data Monitoring System - As in Tier 1&2 + Daily CICO feedback form collating information from student, teacher and parent.
Tier 1 Strategies
- Offer alternative methods to doing assignments - Offer the ability to do assignments by making videos/audios etc.
- Do unfinished work during recess - Show students that there is a clear consequence to work not being done in class time.
1 . Talk to parent/note home - Getting some background information on the situation will be very useful in moving forward with the issue.
Data Monitoring System - Student observation, parent communication, handed in work.
Comparison of strategies - The strategies I would apply for both of my behaviour issues (Bullying and Lack of Responsibility) would follow a broadly similar scheme.
Tier 1 - begin with parent contact for background information, some sort of consequence for the negative behaviour.
Tier 2 - Behaviour plans and mentoring (either peer or teacher) to develop relationships and foster more positive behaviors.
Tier 3 - This is where my strategies will really diverge. One of my issues could be a safety issue for the student/other students and one is more of a learning issue. The one where the student is a danger will be dealt with by removing/isolating the student in a positive manner. The learning behaviour issue will be dealt with by using a CICO system to give the student more accountability and create a closer relationship between student and teacher.
