Blocks
s,p,d and f- follow the order of sub-shell filling
7.2 Ionisation energies
1st IE-Energy needed to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions
-
Factors
Atomic Radius- Bigger atomic radius less attracted electrons are to nucleus- Lowers IE- Large effect
Nuclear Charge- More protons in nucleus- more attraction, harder to remove electrons- Higher IE
Electron shielding- Inner shell electrons repel outer shell electrons from the attractive force of the nucleus- Lowers IE
2nd IE- Energy needed to remove one electron from each ion in one mole of gaseous 1+ ions to form 1 mole of gaseous 2+ ions
-
Large increase between 2 IE shows 2nd being removed from inner shell (requires more energy as closer to nucleus)
Trends- Steady increase of IE across a period and sharp decrease in IE from end of one period to start of the next
