Endocrine System
Endocrine Glands
-
Adrenal cortex
-secretes corticosteroid hormones.
-2 main classes: mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids
Zona fasciculata
-secretes glucocorticoids (help maintain blood glucose levels)
-"stress hormone"- secreted w/short-term stress, long-term stress; glucocorticoids keep blood glucose levels high enough to support brain activities while forcing most other body cells to other energy sources
Zona reticularis
-secretes glucocorticoids and androgen
-androgen is converted in other tissues to testosterone and estrogen
-
Thyroid Gland
Thyroid hormone
-increases basal metabolic rate (rate at which body uses O2 to transform nutrients to energy)
Calcitonin
-active only in children
-osteoclast activity must be slowed to allow bone deposition and bone growth
Adrenal medulla
Part of autonomic nervous system.
-secretes epinephrine and norepinepherine- flight-or-flight response
Anterior pituitary
-
Gonadotropins
-stimulation of gonads to release hormone
-follice-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone
Adrenocorticotropic hormone
-stimulates adrenal cortex to release hormones that help body cope with stress
