Spectrometry
Mass Spectrometry
only records cations
base peak - peak with greatest intensity
more stable cations more abundant
methyl cations too unstable - only radical in cleavage since undetected
x axis - mass to charge ratio
molecular ion - highest m/z value (furthest right)
highest mass fragment
Fragmentation Patterns
Amines
cleavage next to carbon bearing nitrogen
resonance stabilized cations
Ethers
cleave O-R bond or
either + charge or radical may be on oxygen
cleave group next to oxygen bearing carbon
+charge on oxygen - resonance stabilized cation
Ketones and Aldehydes
loss of alkyl group next to oxygen-bearing carbon
oxygen carries +charge
Isotopic Abundance
If Br present - M+2 = M+
If Cl present - M+2 is 1/3 of M+
If N is present -
M+ an odd number
If S present - M+2 is 4% of M+
If I present - peak at 127, large gap
