muscle types

-
smooth
Muscle tissue in the walls of body organs such as the stomach and intestines. It controls involuntary movement and makes the organs expand and contract.
neck\ chest muscles
trapezius
extends or straightens and hyperextends the neck. Also elevates the shoulders, muscle involved in shrugging the shoulder
pectoralis major
flexes, adducts, and rotates the shoulder medially
sternocleidomastoid
one side contraction: laterally flexes neck, rotates head to opposite side;
both sides together: flexes neck forward

Myofibril
A fibril collectively arranged in longitudinal bundles in muscle cells (fibers); composed of thin filaments of actin and a regulatory protein and thick filaments of myosin.

sliding filament theory
when muscle fibers are activated by the nervous system, the myosin head attach to binding sites on the thin filaments and the sliding begins. Each cross bridge attaches and detaches several times during a contraction (like legs of a centipede), generating tension that helps to pull the thin filaments towards the center of the sarcomere.
