Process for identifying and providing aid to a struggling student.
Signs that a student may be struggling:
Student is reading and/or writing below grade level.
There is a clear difference in student's abilities between subject in which they are struggling and other subjects.
The student "withdraws" in subject where they are struggling. (Not active, not motivated)
Student has recently gone through a life trauma.
The student exhibits poor behaviour when asked to participate in subject in which they are struggling.
The student avoids the subject in which they are struggling altogether.
My ideal process to identify a struggling student and implement a successful IEP.
1) Teacher looks at various data points (district scores, curriculum benchmarks, weekly assesments in order to determine if the child is performing below average. (Interview with Erin.)
2)If you are unsure if a student needs special education, seek another opinion
8) My sources states that once a child has been given a IEP, it is very difficult for them to come out of that program. It states a child is reevaluated every 3 years. I believe that period for reevaluation should be shortened to every year. In this way, less emphasis can be put on the area where a student may not be struggling anymore and more emphasis put on another area where they may be falling behind. Also, resources used on the student that is no longer struggling can be used to support another struggling student in the school.
3) Idea that child may need special education remains.
7) The IEP can be reviewed and changed in order to maximise support to the student.
4) Child is evaluated and found eligible for services.
6) Progress is measured and regularly reported to parents.
5) IEP meeting is organised with homeroom teacher, special ed teacher and admin staff where an IEP is formed.
