Disruptive Student Behaviors
Talkative Students
Scenario:
Students are continuing to talk during lecture or being off-task during group projects after repeated interventions by the teacher
Data Tracking:
Data will be tracked on a shared cloud server. Teachers will fill out incident reports which will automatically feed into a data tracking system. Multiple iterations of consistent bad behavior can be logged as such, allowing the school to have observable data to cite for the increasing severity of consequences.
Tier 1 Intervention
: Alternate Seating in Own Space
Remove the root cause of the problem: students sitting next to someone with whom they are social. By separating students, the teacher can refocus the class' attention without having to resort to more severe and distracting course corrections.
Helps to "reset" the class and allow students to give their undivided attention to the speaker / assignment
Tier 2 Intervention:
Behavior Contract
Holds students accountable by implementing a signed contract that both parties agree and sign off on. It fully cements the expectations and consequences for unacceptable behavior / actions.
Improves student engagement and motivation by making them directly tied to their performance as a class participant.
Tier 3 Intervention:
Detention
Detention can be used to punish bad behavior but also a a means to refocus the student on learning
Productive use of time is required
Cuts into what students highly value: their free time
Entitled Students
Scenario
: A particular student travels with his/her family a significant amount. They report that they will miss extensive class time, including some examinations.
Data Tracking
: Attendance will be tracked daily for every student. Absences will have thresholds and punishments associated with surpassing those thresholds.
Tier 1 Intervention:
Call parent or note home
A phone call is made every day that a student is marked absent without reason / justification (eg: doctor's note)
Once a student has missed a certain number of days, a letter is sent to their house stating that consequences will be enforced if more absences are accumulated.
Tier 2 Intervention:
Check In Check Out (CICO
Students must check-in with an adult at the beginning of the school day
Enforces student presence and accountability
Positive alternative to suspension, which would only exacerbate the problem
Tier 3 Intervention:
Parent Supervision
Students are required to have their parents bring them into school.
Getting the parents involved means that they too suffer the impacts of extended vacations.
