Digestive System
-
Accessory organs
-
Liver to the gallbladder to bile to the pancreas to enzymes (spleen is not part of the digestive system)
Digestion
-
Mechanical- breakdown is physical, into smaller pieces.
-
-
-
-
Pathway food travels as it enters the oral cavity to the anus- mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum to anus
-
-
Peritoneum and mesenteries- is a double layer of peritoneum from the body wall to digestive organs. Holds organs in place, stores fat and locate blood vessels and nerves
Greater Omentum- greater curvature of the stomach then drapes over the intestines, attaches to the posterior wall. Stores fat, holds stomach and transverse colon in place, migrates and surrounds an inflamed/infected organ or part of an organ
-
Mesocolon- is the transverse colon and sigmoid colon, starts in the posterior wall
-
Stomach
General function- storage, mechanical digestion which turns into chyme
Parietal Cells- making hydrochloric acid, gastric intrinsic factor is needed for absorption of vitamin B12 which is needed for erythrocyte production
Chief Cells- secretes pepsinogen (inactive) then in the presence of acid becomes pepsin (active) = enzymes that breaks down proteins
Cavities
Retroperitoneal cavity- consists of duodenum, pancreas, ascending colon, descending colon and rectum
Intraperitoneal cavity- consists of the liver, stomach, transverse colon, jejunum, ileum and sigmoid colon
