LYMPHATIC/IMMUNE SYSTEMS
Function: returns excess tissue fluid back to the blood vascular system; absorbs lipids from small intestine; protects body from foreign organisms by fighting infections.
Immune System Components
Lymphoid tissue
Location #1: Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue. Location: mucous membranes of digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts.
-
Lymphoid organs
-
Secondary (lymph nodes, spleen, and MALT that form tonsils, nodules in intestine and appendix): store immunocompetent and memory lymphocytes.
Spleen: reticular tissue; function - removal bloodborne antigens and removal and destruction of aged blood cells.
Tonsils: epithelium, 4 types: palatine, lingual, pharyngeal, tubal; packed with lymphocytes.
Aggregated Lymphoid Nodules: clusters of lymphoid follicles in small intestine and appendix; destroy microorganisms and generate memory lymphocytes for protection

Lymph is an interstitial fluid in lymph vessels; contains fewer blood cells, fewer proteins. Lymph flow - ONLY toward the heart (one-way system). Pathway: Lymphatic capillaries -> Collecting lymphatic vessels -> Lymph nodes -> Lymph Trunks -> Lymph ducts -> Left & Right brachiocephalic veins -> Superior vena cava -> Heart.
