Odysseus and Eumaeus start heading down towards town. On their way, they encounter Melanthius, who scorns Eumaeus and kicks Odysseus, shaming him for begging. Once they reach the palace, Odysseus receives the same treatment. He asks that Antinous give him some food, or something. Antinous refuses, but Odysseus keeps pressing him, insulting and angering him. Enraged, Antinous grabs a stool and hits Odysseus. Everyone is shocked at this action, even the suitors.
