Co-constructing Central ideas with students
Connections to:
Agency

ATLs
-
Self-management
Build resilience by ensuring that learning goals co-constructed with students are challenging but achievable. (Needs careful consideration)
-
Concepts
Develops understanding of a range of key concepts including: Perspective, Function, Responsibility
Students co-construct beliefs and mental models about how the world works based on their experiences and prior learning.
Reflections on the TSM:
A useful tool to structure an approach to co-construction of of central ideas.
I couldn't help thinking that the success criteria in the TSM looked overly student-led and seemed to lack teacher input.
Criteria for academic challenge and significance from a school wide perspective were missing from the conclusions of what makes a good central idea.
The success criteria did not consider the transdisciplinarity of the ideas generated.
I think co-constructing central ideas with students is a wonderful idea must be done very carefully with foresight that school-wide ATL and subject knowledge targets and transdiscipinarity need to be considered in addition to a unit being relevant and interesting.to students. For personal inquiries and exhibitions perhaps can consider these factors less.
Exhibition
co-construct success criteria and reflection opportunities that include self-assessment of their learning and an evaluation of the exhibition proces
Assessment
Students and teachers set and reset learning goals to answer the questions “Where am I going in my learning?” and “What do I need to get there?” Success criteria describe what quality and achievement will look like. They are specific and measurable. Students and teachers co-construct success criteria to answer the questions “What does successful learning look like?” and “What are we looking for during learning?
