LECTURE 9 : Package Printing Technology
Files Format Used
• TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
– A bitmap format used for exchange of images between applications
• EPS (Encapsulated Post Script)
– Can represebnt both vector and bitmap elements, and is supported by many graphic and layout program
• JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group)
– Used for displaying continuous tone images such as photographs and vectors
• PDF (Portable Document Format)
– Represents both vector and bitmap elements and is primary format for Adobe Illustrator
• Commonly use illustrative and photographic Images and graphic elements
• Need to understand the quality of image resolution:
– The number pixels per inch (ppi) on computer screen
– The number dots per inch (dpi) on printed material
– How many (high, medium, low) are needed for a specific job
Developed in a collaborative, technologically advance work environment.
-Using comp software
-Primary software i) Adobe illustrator
ii) Adabe Photoshop
iii) Adobe InDesign
The Packaging Die
The die is the blue print of the structure or design layout with the excat dimensuions and production specifications
Bleed requirements and gluing spec are included
Solid lines: cut lines and depict the package conture
Dot lines: represent score lines (of folding cartons, set up the box)
Printing Technology
Offset Lithography (offset)-The process is based on the principle of oil repelling water off a surface
Flexography (flexo)-The principle is almost similar with letter press, produces a raised image area that carries the inks
-The plate transfers the image to the packaging substrate
Gravure - The surface of cylinder is engraved and this area will carry ink.
-This ink will ber transferred directly to the material
Letterpress(oldest) - Using metal plate with raised surface that carrie the ink and transfers it directly to the substrate
Special printing - screen printinf based on stenciling. E.g: paperboaer, paper, plastic & glass, wood, metal, fabric & leather
-Can be implemented to screen bottle by using rotary machine
