DEFINITION
Characterized by regular breathing during sleep
Classified into:
Obstructive sleep apnea
Primary sleep apnea
Sleep-related hypoventification
Sleep-related hypoxemia (OSA)
OSA is caused by: Repeated episodes of partial or total closing
SYMPTOMS
Excessive daytime sleepness
Loud snoring
Observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep
Abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking
Awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat
Morning headache
Difficulty concentrating during the day
Experiencing mood changes such as depression or irritability
High blood pressure
Nighttime sweating
TREATMENTS
Weight Loss
Increased exercise and reduced calorie diets
Positional therapy
Postural change during sleep
Oral appliances for mild apnea
The mandibular advancement device(MAD) which pushes lower jaw forward and keeping airway open
CPAP therapy
Use high pressure blower that delivers continuous air flow to mask worn during sleep
Patients with sleep apnea are advised to abstain from alcohol and sedative medications
