PBL 1: Properties and characteristics of population,
Human Population regulationBased on THE PURGE movie sequels
1. The dramatic increase in human population
1.1 Human population reaches its first billion in 1803, leading to a continuous increase along the years to come. Average population growth of 0.4% annually from 10000 BC until 1700, human population increases at a very fast pace after 1800. Asia has the most population at 4.6 billion which is 68% of the world population in 2019.
5.The purge mechanisms of controlling human population
5.1 Any criminal acts, including murdering is allowed and no emergency services can operate during the purging. Through this killings, the government assume they can control the human population.
7. The damage caused by overpopulated humans to the hotspot biodiversity
7.1 a) Damage to natural resources & environment:
- Natural resources depletion
- Environmental degradation
b) Damage to human population:
- Conflicts and wars
- Rise in unemployment
- Pandemics and epidemics
- Malnutrition, starvation and famine
7.2 Ways to solve overpopulation:
- Provide a better education for young women, girls and married couples from around the world in terms of family planning and efficient birth control to help them plan wisely and prevent unwanted pregnancy.
- Tax exemptions for the married couples that have one or two children can prevent overpopulation since people tend to incline towards money.
7.3 The criteria for biodiversity hotspots are the region has to be irreplaceable with at least 1500 endemic vascular plants and it has to be threatened, meaning it contains 30% or less of its original vegetation
7.4 Currently, 36 areas qualify as biodiversity hotspots. They support more than half of the world’s plant endemic species and nearly 43% of bird, mammal, reptile and amphibian as endemics while representing just 2.4% of Earth’s land surface.
7.5 The purge mechanism is not a relevant method to control to the human population in real-world due to it is a cruel and inhumane approach as it legalizes the killing of other innocent individuals for the sake of economy.
3.‘The Day of Seven Billion’ October 31 2011
3.1 Fertility rate is declining. For example, in the early 1960s, the average fertility rate was nearly 5 children per woman to 2.5 per child in today’s world, which has slowed the population growth. However, the human population will definitely continue to rise in absolute numbers because of the optimistic population momentum, even though the annual growth rate in percentages has already been declining for several years.
3.2 According to United Nations predictions it could reach 9.7 billion people by 2050, and over 11 billion by 2100.
6. The purge mechanisms has affected the economy
6.1 The first Purge experiment conducted in Staten Island didn't go as expected. The volunteers didn’t want to purge as what the government asked, thus, the government secretly released groups of mercenaries. This looks like purging has occurred and the ‘positive’ result is announced to the public. From this perspective, having a strong economy is very important to solve poverty and homeless issues that cause America to be over-populated.
2. Human population transition
2.1 The factors for the world population transitions from rural to urban is because of the declining income from agricultural activity, lack of alternative job, declining local economy and denied access to basic facilities which encourage people to migrate from rural to urban.
2.2 The point of the population considered to be primarily urban is an area with a population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile and at least 2,500 total people as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.
8. Possibility of using THE PURGE in the real world
8.1 The abundance of the human population does effect the resources in biodiversity hotspot as this will increase the resource consumption, thus lead to competition for resources within the area
8.2 Alternatives to control human population
- In medicine, humans can be regulated through contraception.
- In social changes, delayed marriage due to both are working, government interferences such as family planning and education level by the community.
4. The impact of 7 billion human population to the world’s economy
4.1 Overpopulation of humans leads to an increase in food production. The food companies around the world eventually compete with each other to gain food resources causing the increase in price. It also causes an increase in unemployment for people in the world. Therefore, affecting the world's economy. The same goes for the high demand for land, which leads to increased land prices. Lastly, the overpopulation of humans causes low per capita income and influences the world's economy.
