After Katharina's father passed away, she shared house duties with her mother, while studying hard and getting decent grades. She works for her neighbours, learning to cook, slaughter and clean. After she leaves school, Else Woltersheim helps her find a job as a maid. She also graduates from a home-economics school, giving her better opportunities.
After building a good reputation as a maid, the Blornas offer her work and a room at their house. She refuses to live with them, so the Blornas help her to buy her own apartment, making her happy. By living a frugal life, she helps her ill mother and brother.
Katharina divorced her ex-husband Wilhelm Brettloh, who is 'a genuine ass-liker and a show-off'
At Else’s party Katharina meets Ludwig, and falls in love with him. He stays at Katharina’s apartment for a night and then she helps him find a route to escape.
While having breakfast, police officers enter her flat and take her to the station, accusing her of hiding the murderer and helping him to escape. This is captured by the Werner Totges, who releases articles claiming that Katharina is Gotten's accomplice.
Totges interviews and misinterprets the words of Katharina's acquintances, portraying her as a marriage-breaker and a gold digger. Totges even claims the Blornas are communists who help Katharina in her criminal activity.
The police find a diamond ring and love letter in Katharina’s apartment and try to persuade her to give them a name of a person who gives these gifts to her. As she received these from Alois Straublender, she remains silent knowing that no one would believe her. Straublender also gave Katharina a key to his house, which she passed to Ludwig, so that he could hide there. The police officers find and arrest him there.
