Protest and Counter-Protest over Expansion of Bansko Ski Zone
Society
Outside the Council of Ministers this morning, environmentalists insisted on observing the environmental legislation and preserving Pirin as a unique natural site.
It seems that it is very important to the residents/environmentalists that Pirin be preserved as the natural site they have grown attached to. If this site was to be tampered with, the environmentalists might protest further and on a much larger scale.
Residents of Bansko, Razlog and the surrounding area temporarily closed the international road E-79 near Simitli asking for the ski zone to be expanded.
This counter-protest closed a big international road for a period of 20 minutes, which may seem short until one takes into consideration the societal impact of this stretch, since it's in a highly populated zone by tourists and residents alike.
Residents from Bansko area requested the construction of a second cabin lift.
It seems that the residents of the zone have been requesting this expansion for a long while, no doubt in relation to the opportunities of living right in a popular tourist destination. This cabin lift would also provide convenience to them, since it would not only alleviate the stress and lighten the load of transportation to the zone due to splitting traffic in half, but also because of the possiblity of further future expansion.
Economics
The expansion of the ski zone in Bulgaria’s winter resort Bansko
The ski zone in Bansko is already a very popular (if not the most popular, aside from Pamporovo) tourist and enthusiast destination for the winter. If it were to be expanded, it would attract a larger amount of people.
More job opportunities would be created in the spheres of maintenance, shopkeeping, hotel staff (the ski zone most often includes a few hotels), etc.
The ski zone in Bansko is already a very popular (if not the most popular, aside from Pamporovo) tourist and enthusiast destination for the winter. If it were to be expanded, it would attract a larger amount of people.
More revenue would be generated for further expansion of the ski zone and its renovation, maintenance, tourist retention rates, etc.
In the event of a possible investment interest, a second ski lift will be built in Bansko, taking into account all environmental legislation
Investors attracted to the area could contribute to other aspects of the ski zone needing renovation / expansion, etc.
Politics
The cabinet postponed the decision several times.
This issue is very controversial, meaning that such a major decision would impact (change the outcome of) other political matters, such as the Pirin Nature Park Management Plan.
Outside the Council of Ministers this morning, environmentalists insisted on observing the environmental legislation and preserving Pirin as a unique natural site.
Since people would like to preserve Pirin as a natural site, they may (and have already begun) pushing the govnerment and the Council to take into consideration the legislation for environmental protection. This legislation could be changed due to protests / demands from the people. Environmentalists could veyr well cause a change in this legistation.
He motivated his decision by saying that it was necessary the chages to the concession agreement of the ski area to go along with the change of the Pirin Park Management Plan
This concession has already been changed multiple times to accomodate the Pirin Park Management Plan. It has thus had a major impact on a major decision for the Bansko area, in large due to the public environmental opinions.
