fractures of proximal humerus and humeral shaft - Coggle Diagram

- - - - treatment for radial nerve palsy:
        -majority are neuropraxic and improve with observation alone (>90%)
        -splinting and ROM to prevent contracture
        -nerve conduction and EMG performed after 3 months if no improvement clinically
        -neurolysis or repair if no signs of recovery after -4 months
        -acute nerve exploration indicated by open fractures, high-grade soft tissue, secondary nerve palsies
  - - - -ORIF and intramedullary fixation produce reliable results
        -rate of fracture union is 94-98% in ORIF, 87-94% for IMF
        -both low, but sig rates of complications
        
        -residual elbow pain for ORIF is common
        -shoulder pain and need for repeat surgery is common in IMF
        -slightly better outcomes with ORIF
