cell fractionation:

4) ultracentrifugation: pour the mixture into a centrige and spin it quickly, the denser parts of the mixture will sink to the bottom to form the "sediment pellet"
5) the liquid layer on top (supernatent) is poured into a fresh tube, leaving the sediment containing nuclei
6) the supernatent may be then spun again at a faster speed to produce a new pellet containing mitochondria
