Muscles, Adaptations - Coggle Diagram
Muscles
-
Neurons
-
-
-
-
Cell membrane potential
In a resting neuron, a greater number of positive ions are located outside the cell causing the membrane to be electrically charged
Polarization is maintained by the cells ability to control whether or not some ions are allowed to cross the cell's membrane through protein channels
-
Types of muscle
Cardiac muscle
-
-
Striated- in a complicated and unstructured network. The muscle fibres are arranged to cause a squeezing motion when contracted.
-
-
Smooth muscle
-
-
-
Diaphragm, blood vessels, stomach, intestines, iris of the eye
Skeletal muscle
-
-
Striated appearance, the sacromere contains structures to contract that cause this appearance
Highly vascular, allows sufficient blood supply for aerobic activity
-
-
Other key terms
-
Fixator
Muscles that stop any unwanted movement throughout the whole body by fixing or stabilising the joint involved
-
-
Adaptations
Long Term
Hypertrophy
Muscles are overloaded, which will make them increase in size and strength
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Short term
Increased blood supply
-
There is a greater demand for oxygen and glucose, increase in blood supply
-
