Supervisor meeting - 14th December 2020
Grants
No other societies thought of
Mindmap notes went down well and were helpful to supervisors
Maltwood fund is probably best bet
Be very careful of applying for such a large sum, instead go for £1000 and match with some money from BU research fund and potentially Stephen at the Roman Baths
Need to contact BU person to see how much is left in my research fund
Draft application and submit to supervisors prior to return in January
Who would my references be? When would I need their statements by?
Who is on the committee that reviews grants at Som. Arch. Nat. Hist. Soc.?
Need to frame application in general terms to demonstrate impact to a non-specialist audience
Emphasise how project achieves aims of fund and Somerset society more generally
Should join society ASAP
Also draft application to Roman association, but tailor application to their specific aims, don't just copy and paste application for Maltwood Fund
When applying for grant, do so in the name of the Roman Baths so that hopefully they can handle the money if it is granted so that I won't be caught up in paperwork at BU
Email Stephen and ask if this is an option
Would be good also to have HE permissions secured prior to submission of the application
Chapter feedback so far
Derek agreed with Kate's feedback
Positive overall, but a few little tweaks to make
Will submit rest of chapter to them before they come back from leave in January => priority
Sampling at Roman Baths
Went well, but first session was a little slow
Incorporated microfossil recording as present/absent/void
Fresh breaks able to be created very fast and with minimal impact of sherd, accroding to mitigation strategy laid out in proposal
Hopefully go back and continue sampling later this week, but to be arranged with Susan
Susan impressed by my identification of tiles at base of reservoir
HE sampling proposal
No new progress
Draft and submit to supervisors prior to return in January
Would be good to have this sorted before submitting application to grants
Would increased sample numbers be less likely to be accepted by HE?
Make sure to plan contingency sampling options if HE proposal is rejected => stone recovered ex-situ
This needs to be included in grant proposals
Should begin thinking of who my reviewers could be, so that can contact in new year
Academic?
Commercial?
Inside or outside department?
Roman or materials specialists?
Kate, Mark and Derek present
Data management plan
No new progress really
Would be good to get entire draft done by January
Using ADS guidelines and recording system
Email BORDAR to see what they recommend about R Markdown data
Email Fabio again about previous email
