HEART OF DARKNESS
form
to describe the dualism between reason and istinct, Conrad uses a lot of symbols
There is a mixture of long and short periods that reflect how our mind works
novel written by Conrad
he is an author of transition
he moved from the values of the victorian age to the description of the inner part of ourselves
first level of interpratation
It simply is a journey made by Marlow in the "heart" of Africa
He was sent along the river Congo to look for a colonizer called Kurtz, who lived in a inner station. He also was an idealist who wanted to bring civilization to the black
second level of interpretation
it is a sharp critique against colonialism
colonization is nothing but exploitation
Africa is compared to Hell: people are slaves, in chain. In addition, Conrad used negative words such as unhappiness, death-like, black shadows
black people were called "enemies" or "criminal" but they weren't
he is not attacking the UK directly because Congo was a belgium colony
he also uses irony by saying something but meaning the opposite
third level of interpretation
this novel is a journey inside man's subconscious
Kurtz is the representation of the most istincitve part of men: when he is alone in this dark and misterious place the deepest and most brutal part of himself surfaces
Marlow represents the rationality, in fact he managed to always keep his ration present through this work
