Bulgarians battle to keep warm
Economics
"Glass, steel, beer and metal producers were forced to shut down, as experts estimated the loss to industry to be around 500m Bulgarian Lev (£227m) a day."
When one sector stops working, it causes great losses on the economics. Employers and employees are left without jobs and anything to do or to live with (money). The country's economic status is changing badly.
"We've sold 240 electrical heaters in two days," said Alexandra Nikolova, sales assistant in an electrical shop."
When one sector is in a bad condition, other ones are benefited by that. Electrical heaters are better for people and their bills later because they are not charged that much. Also when there is no gas suplly, people have to do different things to keep themselves warm, as buying heaters.
"I don't expect we'll see any compensation from those responsible." If it continued she said, she would be forced to lay some of her work force off."
Employers are forced to fire their people because they cannot pay without working. Without work there is no development on businesses. Therefore, the economics go down, become worse. Unemployed people cannot pay their bills or live at all because they have no money flow. So, they have to stay cold during the winter.
Politics
"The Bulgarian government has done almost nothing to change this state of affairs, indeed it has only deepened Bulgaria's dependence on Russia,"
Bulgaria's government has to change the affairs of the country with other ones, mostly with Russia. Russia is a huge, influential country and the government cannot let go of this type of ally. But they don't understand that it is the people who is suffering from all this. There could be benefits but the negatives are there too and are connected with keeping a normal life during winter - warm/hot, healthy.
"Being dependent on the goodwill of Gazprom in a harsh winter leaves Bulgaria not just vulnerable, but helpless..."
Bulgaria has to change the way of receiving gas supplies. The country has no other suppliers than the russians which makes the country "vulnerable and helpless". If there is national gas supplier of just other options for gas, the country won't be suffering. "When it is turned off, the country feels its acutely"
Environment
"The air was thick with a mix of tar and burning rubber, as some plants switched from gas to heating oil."
The air is polluted by all of the emissions from the plants which affects the health of people and of the environment, the gasses are deadly for some organisms.
" The consumption of electricity soared to record levels as people sought alternative forms of heating."
The dangerous gasses produced by people because they try everything to stay warm, are polluting the air in the country in a very bad way.
Society
People have to pay high price for electricity "We can barely afford the electricity bill we'll receive at the end of this. But it's simple - if we don't pay for electricity, we'll be paying for medicine for our child."
Because of he higher bills people cannot afford it and there are "thousands of apartments heat-less". Many families have to choose between paying for food and living or to pay to not freeze in their own home. Society should not be forced to pay such taxes to stay healthy.
"A workplace, where there is no heating at all and staff keep their coats on at their computers"
That is not a normal place to work or stay in. People freeze all day and than "at the end of the day hurry home through the ice and snow to try and warm up." They have to suffer and risk their lives because of other people's decesions.
