Coronary Heart Disease- This is when a build-up of fat, caused by high levels of LDL or bad cholesterol build up in the coronary arteries. Due to this blockage, the lumen shrinks, causing the overall blood flow to shrink as there is less room to flow through. This starves the heart of vital necessities, like glucose, which is needed for energy to be created, and over time if not treated, the cells begin to die and a heart attack can ensue.
Statins- These are drugs, which help to decrease the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood, which means that fatty material buildup is slowed. However, they can cause serious side-effects, like liver complications.
Stents-These are metal, mesh tubes which are inserted into the affected area of the coronary artery to stop the fat blockage, opening up the lumen once again. These are very effective, yet despite this, they are still a surgery.
