        In the 1980s, the United States coastal guard intercepted about 25,000 Haitians, returning many back to Haiti. But, in 1991-1992 alone, at the height of the Haitian refugee crisis, they intercepted over 40,000 Haitian. President Bush authorized the use of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station to imprison these migrants.
        
        Many of the people in Florida did not Haitian refugees in any significant numbers.
        
        Ironically, many people who were against the Haitian refugees were themselves Cuban refugees just a few decades ago.

        Perhaps it was the price of adjusting so many refugees, many who were uneducated and came with nothing besides the clothes on their bodies. Maybe it was the unpopularity of accepting refugees. Many believe, however, that the fact that the Haitians were poor and black could have also hurt their chances of getting U.S. refugee status.

        During the 1980-1989, there was huge internal fighting among the communist party. Many high-ranking officials were highly critical of many others, on charges that their policies were not actually helping the poor or that the "commodification" of political power was considered corruption.
        
        Many of the high-ranking officials that were not too careful about displaying how wealthy they were were executed publicly in front of the very villages they betrayed.
        
        Millions of people, to this day, are still on the move from rural to urban and large cities; the shifts to more market-based economics is still felt today.
        
        A few months after the death of Hu Yaobang in 1989, who many regard as heroic for his denouncing of the corruption of many public officials, many thousand go to Tienanmen Square to protest for more democratic rights.
        
        President Bush, who was on good terms with the Chinese leadership, pleaded with them not to crackdown on the Tienanmen square protesters. However, Chinese officials pull the trigger anyways.
