Career as Stories, People's actions are based on their own personal…
Career as Stories
Storytelling
There is no 'ultimate' truth about anyone's career - they are just stories we tell. They have their own usefulness and their own limitations
When we talk about our careers, we tell stories about ourselves. Ex. when we leave a job or get a new job - there is always a story to tell
-
We can gain an understanding about a company from the stories people tell about the experience they had with them (Glass Door)
We create stories to justify our actions, provide clarity and understanding to our lives and tp project ourselves onto others.
-
Narrative & Meaning
We like sharing our career stories because we don't see it as threatening and it's our "story" to tell. BUT there is no such thing as a PURE career story
-
-
The stories people tell themselves and others helps them understand their careers and the reason behind their career decisions
Learning and meaning happen when we make sense of our experiences and realize our stories have patterns and themes
-
Writing one's story is not a statement of truth but an interpretation of all your multiple experiences. With this in mind we can use stories to re-invent ourselves. Your story is something you think others should know about.
Career Narratives do not end. We are always configuring our stories to include new skills, new experiences and new interests
Resume
Used to describe background and skills needed for the job. Also includes an account of previous experience in list form along with any other additional information about the job seeker.
The ability to tell a good story on your resume is important in career self-management and advancement
-
Be sure not to embellish on your resume. Once you are in front of interviewer they might ask you to elaborate what you wrote on resume.
Social Media
Facebook - potential employers may search your fb account. Be sure your "visual story" (facebook account) - displays a "hirable" image
LinkedIn - the first place most recruiters look when hiring for jobs. This is said to be your resume on steroids. Make sure it is polished a strictly professional
Instagram - Potential employers look at all aspects of your online presence. Be sure if you do not want to share your insta stories - you have proper privacy settings
People's actions are based on their own personal worldview - they construct knowledge based on their experiences :star:
:star:This metaphor just proves how career development needs to head into the direction of narrative analysis in order to truly understand our clients. Even how they tell the story and what angle they take and the points they bring up - speaks volumes of who they are and what they desire in a career. :star:
