They were men from new France who went between the fur merchants of Montreal and the fur trade posts of the Great Lakes, and eventually more to the west

The saying comes from the fur trade, when they would run through the woods.

They would be called paysans, which meant peasants.
They really didn't have much, and wouldn't be uncommon for the Seigneurs to own the Habitans

Seigneurs
Most of the seigneurs were men from noble families, but commoners and women could become seigneurs.
They had to keep there land grants, so they would recruit settlers and babitants, to farm it.
Seigneuries were large plots of land that was owned by signeurs, or landlords
