DEB with type 1 diabetes increases the risk for complications, death rate and morbidity
type 1 Diabetes might be a risk factor for depressive symptoms and eating disorders
Research Design & Methods
Methods
Questionnaires measuring DEB, diabetes distress, depressive symptoms & self-management
HbA1c values given by physicians
Design
Two-wave longitudinal study
Results were published in 2019 in Diabetes Care
Participants
300 Dutch-speaking 16-28-year-olds
With type 1 Diabetes, without cognitive impairment
Data were collected from Belgian Diabetes Registry
Conclusions
Young adults and youth with type 1 diabetes are at a higher risk for clinical DEB and therefore need to be clinically assessed, especially in their adolescence and early adulthood
Results
DEB is most common at the age from 17 to 19
Women are at a higher risk for DEB
Men have an equally high risk for insulin restriction as women
Higher BMI is a risk factor for body dissatisfaction, which is a risk factor for weight managing behavior
Statistical Analyses
Cross-lagged analysis
Mixed ANOVA
Thoughts
The article was quite easy to read & key results were to be found easily
This article made me think more profoundly about the risk for DEB and eating disorders type 1 Diabetes exposes for
I like making mindmaps, so I enjoyed this exercise
