What is situated learning approach?
Instructional approach developed by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger in 1900s.
Students are more inclined to learn by actively participating in the learning experience.
It is a matter of creating meaning from the real activities of daily living where learning occurs relative to the teaching environment.
Encourage reflection and help students to become aware of contextual issues for understanding.
Students are actively involved in addresing real world problems.
Characteristics
Learning
To situate the student in the learning experience.
In the traditional education is common that teachers decide the topic that students must know. However, students learn different things according to their experince.
Not all the students have the same prior-knowledge.
Teachers situate students in real situations, in order to the student can establish a relationship between the environment and the learning.
Interaction
The student learns through collaboration and social interaction.
Students can connect with the community ad understand the community.
The student interacts with materials or solve problems situated in an authentic setting.
The student must interact with different materials, people and environment.
Environment
Real-world contexts within a learning community.
Students should be active in the community. It is necessary to propose real-world contexts.
Students should be embedded in situations where they can participate.
The topics that teachers propose must be related with the interests of the students.
Role of the student
Students' role changes from being a begginer to an expert.More active and inmerse in the community.
Learning takes place through relationships between people and connecting prior knowledge.
Role of the teacher
Teachers must adapt the environment
Sometimes teachers do not have the opportunity to go out, so they adapt the classroom using technological resources. Likewise, teachers must propose activities that encourages the collaborative skills, teamwork,etc.
Teachers must propose authentic activities
Teachers situate students in real-life scenarios related to the interests of the students.
Teachers have to observe students attitudes, behaviors, problems with interaction,etc
Teachers must support students who are unable to complete the tasks: The teacher acts as a guide in the learning process.
Activities that we can implement in the classroom
Student's teamwork: Focus on the collaboration and social interaction.
Role playing: Actions involved in everyday situations and implement in the classroom with the objective of increase social interaction.
Social community work.
Cooperative education and internship: Students are immersed in complex, realistics and problem center activities. Likewise, those activities allow them get involved in real situations and helping the community by reflecting about the life works.
