Rebuilding Kosovos Society and Economy

Kosovos Economy

Social Consequences and Refugee Problem

Acts Of Revenge

Kosovo is a land with many resources

Majorly lignite which is a fossil fuel making it invaluable to the economy

p

Providing over 90%of the countries electricity deposit

the problem however lies in extracing deposits, whic requires investment

after the war, the economy of kosovo was based heavily upon agriculture

it only contributed to 13% of the GNP and majority of these products were used by the kosovars

this generated very little income for the countries economy

overall the post war economy became heavily dependent on foriegn aid

post war reconstructure brought upon an economic boom which hid kosovo underlining problems

kosovos encomy was geared more toward demand than production

most kosovar recieved recieved more money from relatives working abroad opposed to them working in kosovo

public expenditure was the cause for some of the deep rooted problems in kosovo

there was an unofficial currency in kosovo as they had taken the german mark and then after the Euro

unemployment was very high in Kosovo

kosovo still remains one of the poorest countries

12% of the population was living in extreme poverty

the number of deaths relative to what had happened in rwanda was small

however the death toll in kosovo was not accurately known

gthe raw number of those that had died was relatively small, but the social consequences faced were staggering

even after the signing of the ceasefire didnt bring an end to the killing and suffering

the serb and roma minority groups felt the social consequences immediately

another bout of ethnic cleansing happened shortly after the peace agreements

nearly all serbian institiutions dissapeared after the war

in war there are usually acts of reprisal taken by the victors against the defeated

in kosovo serb minorities and the Roma we immediately targeted

Albanians regarded them as complicit if not actively involved in the ethnic cleansing

this was an actof revenge by the ethnic Albanains

during the war serbs drove 90% of the albanian from their homes

many ethnic groups were displaced mostly the serbs

prior to the war serbs were predominant in kosovo

even thogh majority were albanians

as well as serbian domination in the war

many serbs stayed in kosovo as they had always lived there

hpwever majority left as they didnt want to live in an albanian dominant society
