The model was Elizabeth Siddal (Rossetti's wife)
She was posed for over a month in a bath which was heated from below
The lamps went out several times and she got a pneumonia
Her father threatened the painter
JEM decided to rappresente a very relevent scene in Shakespeare's Hamlet, that is Ophelia's suicide
Yet he scene is not in the play, it is an off scene
She is lying on the water surface
Her arms are opened as a sign of surrender and sacrifice
She is abbandoning herself to her destiny
Her mouth is half open
