They know addition concepts and number sense.
They will incorporate language expressions on the story and write math equations.
Grade 1: Mathematics
Show the meaning of addition: putting together and increasing.
Preparation
Language Objectives
Students will use the vocabulary when they are telling the story.
Materials
Chart paper with addition poem, flannel boards with manipulative pieces, white boards and markers, index cards with equations and answers for matching game that have been cut in half.
Content Objectives
Student will show their understanding of addition by telling a story using manipulatives.
Vocabulary
First, then, together, plus and equals.
Motivation
Use pictures for visual support.
Read the poem 3 times and focus on the vocabulary
Read the addition poem, that students have already read.
Presentation
Tell them that they will write the equation of the addition story.
Model how to tell the story using the vocabulary and write the equation on the board.
They will practice 3 words: first, then and together.
Ask students to participate during the example and then ask them to tell a story and help them to write the equation.
Tell the students that they will do addition stories.
Practice
Tell another addition story and ask the team to write the equation. One of them will write and the other will guide.
Repeat the activity with each member of the team.
Make teams of 4
Assess and give feedback to the teams.
Application
Do an inside/outside circle.
Students on the outside will tell a story with the vocabulary.
The inside students will write the equation of the story.
Then they will exchange materials and change the activities, so they can do both works.
Repeat the activity so they can practice.
Review
Give the half of an index card.
Half of the group will have the half of the card that has an equation and the other half will have the answer.
Model the activity.
Students will have the opportunity to read their card out loud.
Then they will search for the answer os their equation or the equation of their answer.
When they found their answer they will go and sit on the rug.
Then ask every pair to say their matches.
Teacher Notes
Scaffold the lesson by having the key words written on the board.
Allow support from their classmates.
Students will participate in all of the activities.
Heterogeneous groups for optimal interaction.
Pairs of one student that needs more support and the other student that can give it, on the circle activity.
On the activities, the pairs can rotate on the circle, but the heterogeneous partner will remain.
