The 5 students who have created the most responses to the open-ended question:
This group becomes the "Symbol makers":
Create symbols (very simplistic and graphic like a road sign, which represent each of their points. They create a game for the class which allow them the reveal the images. Can the others geuss what the symbols convey? If not, they work as a class to give suggestions about how to adapt the symbol)
The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills:
This group becomes the "Problem-Solvers":
Create a comic exposing a problem of a community not having access to food diversity.
Present the comic to the class and have them solve the problem
Example: A neighbourhood does not have enough access to nice supermarkets, only corner stores with unhealthy food options
The 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
This group becomes the "Graphic Organisers"
This group works with me using a graphic organiser which breaks down the advantages of a permaculture farm.
We identify key terms: Seed diversity, soil variety, native seeds, heritage varieties
They use think/pair/share to add different elements to the individual graphic organiser at their own pace before sharing with a partner, then the group
I support them in collaboratively drawing an image of a farm which offers diversity and sustainability.
They then teach the class about their image which introduces the topic of permaculture
