TOPIC 4:Dynamics: Newton’s Laws
of Motion
Force
push or pull
A vector, having magnitude
and direction
Net force=0 at equilibrium
Newton’s First Law of Motion
Law of inertia
Object continues at rest or uniform velocity in a straight line as long as no net force act on it
Mass
A measure of inertia of an object
SI unit = kilogram (kg)
Mass ≠ Weight
Mass is a property of an object
Weight is the force exerted on that object by gravity
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
The rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the resultant force that act on it and is in the direction as the resultant force
When mass is constant, F=ma
When velocity is constant, F=v(dm/dt)
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
Whenever an object exerts a force on second object, the second object exerts an equal force in the opposite direction on first object
Makesure the forces are exerted on different object
Weight
A force exerted on an object by gravity
The force exerted perpendicular to a surface is normal force
