Pre-Assessment- Subtraction Within 10
The class has just finished a unit on Addition to 10. Prior to starting the Subtraction Within 10 Unit, Mrs. Loken had her class take a 10 question pre-assessment. After the pre-assessment, Mrs. Loken analyzed the data and 5 students met the expectation of the assessment. 12 students are approaching mastery, but need more assistance and practice to develop a deeper understanding. 5 students had a difficult time with the assessment; 3 of the 5 are struggling with language and the other 2 have little to no comprehension.
The 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
These 5 students will be put into an enrichment small group where they will get to explore both on-level and above-level work.
These students will work on subtraction within 10 and within 20 on MobyMax. The teacher will then track the data on the teacher portion of the platform to ensure all students are performing on or above level.
These students will be able to work on games during center time. One game they can play is by using playing cards to make and solve equations. They can also work on subtraction flash cards that subtract within 20.
Exit tickets may still be utilized to monitor progress.
The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Can also separate the group into heterogenous pairs and have them work together on "walk the room" activities that dive deeper into subtraction.
Extra subtraction practice time on MobyMax or Zearn where teacher can track data and progress monitor on the platform.
Students will also be put into 3 groups for center work and will have various options for center work. Hands on activities that explore single digit subtraction within 10.
Usage of whiteboards during guided math small groups with teacher.
These students will benefit from whole group instruction.
The 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Offer manipulatives to students to help them with the subtraction problems.
Separate the unit into parts a & b. Part A- Single digit subtraction within 5. Part B- Single digit subtraction within 5-10.
Could use pictures and put directions in student's native language. The great thing is that this unit does not require a lot of instructions/directions.
Work one on one with these students on the two parts of the unit.
Work with our Special Education and RTI coordinators to see about testing for the students in the class with possible special needs.
Progress monitor this group of students closely and possibly seek advice in regard to math intervention.
Provide extra time for work and tests.
Conduct verbal conversations working through subtraction problems
Using pictures to help with math problems. Also providing visuals such as a plate of 10 cookies and each student can practice building subtraction problems verbally by verbal communication and physical activity by taking the cookies off each plate.
This group could be together with all 5 students, but also separated for additional practice with teacher.
